Almost One Year

On Thursday it will be one year since this precious life came into our lives.  On Wednesday it will be one year since my water broke and we headed to the hospital.  We went to Boston Market on Saturday night which is where we shared our last meal as a couple without kiddos.  We reflected on the night we went to the hospital and how we stole the honey packets for labor.  :)  I am so thankful for our birth story, for very little pitocin, for a doula, for my supportive husband and parents, and for the natural birth that I had prayed for.  Most of all, I am thankful for this healthy baby girl and for this year of motherhood that has truly changed me, my life, my walk with my Savior and my heartbeat for the Kingdom of God coming near...

It's funny...my background is in development.  Lately I've had a lot of moms comment to me how they don't want their kids to grow up or they want time to slow down or even stop.  My development background has had me thinking for this last year how much I want to see Emilynn grow up, develop normally, hit milestones, etc.  But finally this week, it has hit me.  I haven't wanted time to stop or even really slow, because my heartbeat is has always been for story and stories move and grow and develop and change.  But the heaviness that comes with children growing up has hit me.  I was making Emilynn's one year movie (which hopefully I will post later this week), and as I look through the pictures and watch the changes, I had a weight on my heart.  I desperately want this little one to KNOW Jesus.  I want her to walk closely with our Savior...to fall hard in love with Him.  It was heavy thinking about the coming years, the training, the discipline, the risk that comes with raising kids and praying for them to become saints.  It's heavy...and in those moments, time slowing would be good...because I still have SOOOO much to learn.  The Lord has reminded me often of the process...the story...it's good.  Emilynn will have a process, she will have a testimony.  I pray that it is wrapped in the knowledge of a Savior from birth, with experiences that were Kingdom filled, with an understanding of her purpose and the love the Lord has for her.

So the stakes are high.  I have had one year pass by with this precious little girl and supposedly the next 17 will go by so very fast.  I have a God that is waiting for me to fully trust Him with this precious heart...with her belief in Him...with her salvation.  I pray that I spend each day, week, year tending the soil of her heart so that she will be ready for the Spirit of God to fall on her.  I pray each night that Emilynn would hear the voice of Jesus in her dreams and that His voice be so familiar to her as she grows...that she would be His sheep, know His voice and follow Him.  May this be so, Lord.  May I never stop praying this prayer.

This year has also been a year of growth for me.  Motherhood has changed me.  I am not sure of all the ways yet...but I have had realizations all along the way.  At the end of it all, I think I can plainly say that I love people better.  I try to put myself in others shoes as much as possible, and I am often reminded of the only thing that works for everyone (every momma, especially) is Jesus.  I desire for our parenting, our discipline, our love, our home to be all for, completely about JESUS...nothing more, nothing less.

I've been reading the book Heartfelt Discipline by Clay Clarkson.  I really appreciated this quote...because I believe it applies to much more than discipline.  He states, "In our efforts to find a universal formula for effective and efficient discipline, we parents can convince ourselves that, if an expert's approach is right for us, then it must be right for everybody.  At that point we being to create a body of "Christian Law."  Just like the Pharisees, who started out with good intentions about wanting to keep God's law, we soon find oursleves trying to live up to a standart that God did not define and, worse, insisting that others live up to it too, judging their parenting standards by our own. That - trying to right by keeping all the rules - of course, is legalism."  I think that applies to much more than parenting.  I think it applies to our walks with God too.  There is not any other universal formula other than Jesus.  He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.  That has become even more simple and true for me this year as a mom.  May you, Spirit, guide in this Truth!

Birthday Bear

This last Thursday we went to Build-a-Bear at the hospital (inside Cook for those who don't know) to build a bear for Emilynn for her birthday.  My mom and I had ordered an unstuffed panda online from Build-a-Bear.  Obaa bought cute birthday clothes and shoes, of course, for this great bear.  Emilynn had a blast and her favorite part was the stuffing machine...she could have watched it for hours!

Watching the lady sew her up

Dressing this precious bear!

Kisses!

She is certainly a diva bear! Sparkling shoes and all!

We had a wonderful time!  Emilynn loves all of her pandas.  We named this one Keiko.  That is what we called Emilynn before she was born.  It means "blessing" in Japanese.  We felt it was appropriate to name this bear for Emilynn's first birthday after her nickname.  Her favorite part of Keiko is still her shoes!

A Wonderful Weekend

Last weekend we took a road trip to see one of my old college roommates, a woman dear to my heart and good for my soul, and her sweet family.  Hannah and Justin have sweet Garrett and are expecting a precious baby girl in the next couple of weeks.  It was precious, precious time.  We were so thankful for how the well Emilynn and Garrett played together.  We actually sat in their living room last Saturday afternoon for hours while the kids played and we fellowshipped.  It was so fun!  We shared wonderful meals, told old stoires, new stories and kids stories.  I'm so thankful for this friendship.  Many of my closest friends are far away, and it can be daunting on my spirit, but it was so refreshing to share this time with them that the time apart is worth it for these kind of times.  Emilynn did wonderful on the trip.  She ate her first restaraunt meal ... Mexican, of course.   It snowed and sleeted all the way home on us.  Ross was delighted!!!

A few pics from the weekend...none of all of us, but the kids are adorable

I love love!

We celebrated Valentine's officially on Thursday, instead of Tuesday.  For anyone that really knows me, this is HUGE.  I am very much a girl who likes to celebrate the day of!  It's hard, even if we are having a party for something around the time for me to not do SOMETHING the day of.  This drives Ross crazy.  But this year, not only did I feel a bit icky on the day of, I also had to work and so did Ross.  So we planned a date night for Thursday...but we also just moved Valentine's day.  So the most that I did on Tuesday was dress Emilynn up and we opened a few cards and gifts from Ojii, Obaa, and others...

Then we really celebrated Valentine's Day.  Emi and I got up early and gave Ross a gift in bed (a book about the best daddy ever for him to read to Emi) and I left a note on the mirror for Ross.  That afternoon I iced Ross fresh sugar cookies (his favorite).  He left me flowers and a very special gift of beautiful words and thankfulness.  We went and ate Indian food, got gelato, and then went to the mall to let me pick out my gift.  We had a wonderful night!  Yummy and romantic!

We had a wonderful time.  We need to be more faithful about going out on dates.  So thankful for this man and his heart!!

Believing in Faith

For the first time in a while (this is going to sound strange), I am re-believing in my faith...finding deep joy in it.  I am finding joy in the knowledge of at least part of the mystery of faith...Faith that heals, faith that changes people, faith that changes perspective, faith that wakes people up...Faith in the One, the Only, the Everything, the Author, the Creator, and the Best Friend I know.

Believing in my faith lately has changed the way I view my job, the way I view broken marriages, couples that cannot conceive, my desire to adopt, my beautiful baby girl, my own marriage, my family, community...and all the other things that require faith in a GOOD God in the world.  Everything really.  Overwhelming and beautiful...

We've had a good few weeks. This was a full week...lunch with old friends, close friends, playdates, women's fellowship...It's been good. Here are a few pictures from lately...

Emilynn looking up from looking through picture albums...one of her favorite hobbies.

Unpacking things is another fun hobby...

It can be hard to get a smile right at the camera these days.  But this is a cute outfit that Grandma gave Emilynn.

New carseat!  This was fitting her in it in the living room.

Daddy made the box into Emilynn's first playhouse with windows and everything!

Dropping a ball out the window.

Emilynn mastered drinking out of a cup a while back but she loves to show off her skills these days.

11 months old and SO FUN!

Emilynn is 11 months today.  She is a beautiful, fun girl.  She is still an excellent sleeper and eater.  She is constantly babbling and talking.  She waves and attempts "bye, bye".  She LOVES to clap especially in the car.  She has started to stand on her own and will push things and walk behind them.  And today we played chase as I crawled after her...she LOVED it.  Ross loves to have crawl races with her down the hallway!  She has also learned to throw a ball and will throw Kodi's bone for him. :)  She is also saying what we think is "Kodi", but it ironically sounds like "doggy."  We've begun to hear "mama" and "dada" specifically.  I love her at this age.  I would have to say her favorite things are to take baths in the big tub and swing outside.  We are still enjoying EVERY moment and watching her precious mind develop.  It's amazing God innately creates in His children.  It is beautiful!
